Yellowstone 2016 - Part 6

The next day we started early on a cold and frosty morning and headed towards the Hayden Valley.

Along the road we found a group watching a Red Fox hunting in a frosty field below the road.

Along the Yellowstone River we found this Great Blue Heron with its breakfast.

There were lots of Canada Geese in the park.

In the middle of the Hayden Valley, we found another group of wolf watchers.  Earlier they had watched a wolf chase an elk cow into the river.  As we were looking, another wolf appeared on a hilltop.

Soon this elk was dashing towards the river with the wolf in pursuit.

The elk made it to the safety of the river and the wolf stopped to look.  Later the wolf came and settled down at the edge of the river.

After at least 20 minutes, the wolf gave up and rejoined his pack behind the hill.  Once she felt safe, the elk finally left the river and hurried out of the area.

Watching from a hilltop behind us was a small group of wolf watchers.  The person at the spotting scope is chief wolf biological technician Rick McIntyre.
