Everglades 2019 - Part 1

Our next stop was a few days in Everglades National Park, camping in the Flamingo section near the southern tip of mainland Florida.  On our first full day, we drove out to the Royal Palms section to revisit a favorite area, the Anhinga Trail.

The parking lot for the Anhinga Trail has attracted a lot of Black Vultures.

For whatever reason, the vultures like to peck at soft rubber parts on the parked cars.

The Park Service provides a bin of plastic tarps and bungees for visitors to use to protect their cars.  Here is our Jeep with a tarp in place.

Recent hurricanes have affected the amount of wildlife in the Anhinga Trail area, but we still were able to see quite a lot.

Great White Egret

First of several alligators

Lots of fish, including some introduced foreign species that have become established

Native Florida Gar

Turtle

Another alligator

Bromeliad

Male Anhinga preening

This particular Anhinga was very accustomed to people walking near it on the boardwalk.

Anhingas have a nickname of "Snake Bird" because they often only have their long necks above the water surface.

Anhinga hunting underwater

A Great Blue Heron in fairly deep water

Blossom of one of the water plants

A couple more alligators

During our drive and roadside stops going back to the campground, we saw a few more "flying creatures".

A White Ibis

Swallow-tailed Kite

Great White Egret
