Whitney Portal and Cerro Gordo

On October 27th we took a drive up to Whitney Portal,
the primary trailhead for climbing Mount Whitney.

On October 28th we drove up to the Cerro Gordo Ghost Town.  The mines of Cerro Gordo were significant producers of silver in the late 1800s and contributed heavily to the growth of Los Angeles.

Horseshow Meadows

In late October we spent a few days near Lone Pine, California.  During one day of that visit, we drove up into the Sierras via the Horseshoe Meadows Road.  This road climbs over 5,000 feet in 16 miles and offers spectacular views of the Owens Valley, Owens Lake bed (now nearly dry) and the surrounding mountain ranges.

Heading South - Fall 2019

After seeing family in Portland, Oregon, we headed south towards Southern California. Here are a few images from that journey.

Near our campground in Hiouchi, California, we found a thicket of blackberry vines with lots of ripe berries.  Being a rare treat for us, we took time to pick some berries.

There are lots of Acorn Woodpeckers around the campground at Cachuma Lake County Park and they use the bark of the oak trees to store acorns.

Crossing Idaho - July 2019

We had a few days to drive from Salt Lake City to Portland to visit Barbara's family, so we had time to spend a couple of days at each stop and explore a little.

Our first stop was near Declo, Idaho.  From here we visited Lake Walcott and the Minidoka National Wildlife Refuge.

At Lake Walcott State Park we discovered that Chaos Wars XXIII was going on.  This is a week long medieval fighting instruction and competition event held every year.

Below the dam for Lake Walcott we spotted many White Pelicans.

Our next stop was near Caldwell, Idaho, from which we visited the World Center for Birds of Prey, outside of Boise.
