Canids in Yellowstone

One of our top hopes while in Yellowstone was to see some wolves in the wild.  On that we had very marginal success.  We did see coyotes frequently and they were much easier to photograph.  We'll just have to go back and try again!

The only wolf we saw was running across a hillside at quite a distance.  These are the only pictures (heavily cropped) we were able to get.

The coyotes we watched seemed to be having a lot of success in their hunting.

Yellowstone's Waterfalls

Yellowstone has many of Barbara's favorite objects, waterfalls!

Upper Yellowstone Falls.

Lower Yellowstone Falls.

Cascades along the Yellowstone River.

Tower Falls.

Firehole Falls.

We saw several trout try to leap up Firehole Falls!

Yellowstone Fall Color

We had come to Yellowstone primarily to see the animals, but we were hoping to see some fall color.  We were lucky to find many reminders of the season.

The Bison of Yellowstone

The American Bison has done very well in Yellowstone, and in various areas within the park are very numerous.

They even seem to rule the roads.

This one was taking a dust bath.

They also make a handy meeting place!

Yellowstone's Thermal Areas

Yellowstone is most famous for its quantity and variety of hydro-thermal features.

Note the small pool in the foreground.

After the geyser in the background quit, this pool quieted down and started to drain.

In just minutes, the pool was completely empty!
