California Spring Wildflowers - Part 1

I've decided to get back into posting to this blog after a major lifestyle change.  Last August we stopped our full time RV lifestyle, sold our motorhome and moved into a retirement community in Solvang, California.  If anyone still enjoys this blog, please let me know so that I will continue making new posts.

This post is about a favorite of ours, the springtime wildflowers that appear on the nearby San Rafael Mountains along Figueroa Mountain Road.

With all the spring rain we received this year, the local area turned very green, and a bit of snow turned the San Rafael Mountains into a special view.

Even Cachuma Lake filled for the first time in over 12 years!

Since this looked to be a good year for spring wildflowers, we began a series of drives to check their progression.

Grass Mountain seems to be an indicator of how good the wildflower displays in the San Rafael Mountains currently are.  On our first visit this year, Grass Mountain just seemed to be hinting at what could be coming.

Near the foot of the mountain we started seeing some of the usual early wildflowers.
These are Fiesta Flowers.  They are common in more damp and shaded areas.

Another early flower is a wild pansy known as Johnny Jump Up or Golden Violet.

Sky Lupine were appearing.

As were Shooting Stars

And Buttercups

These are California Goldfields.

A hillside known to produce very nice displays looked promising, but too early.

Due to damage from heavy rains and snow, the road was closed at the gate on the west side of Ranger Peak.
