is the season for the elk rut when bull elk try to gather and protect a
"harem" of cow elk for the purpose of mating. We saw several groups of
elk (often causing traffic jams), most frequently in Mammoth Hot
Springs Village and along the Madison River.
This bull elk often seen in Mammoth Hot Springs is locally called "Touchdown" because of the unusually rectangular shape of his antlers looking like football goal posts.
Some of the elk also consider the roadways to be theirs.
