After leaving Sedona, we spent a couple of nights in Holbrook, Arizona, so that we could revisit Petrified Forest National Park. Because of road work, we had the choice of visiting the northern or the southern part of the park. We opted to visit the northern part on this visit.
The northern end of the park is in the Painted Desert which is an area of colorful badlands cutting across north-east Arizona.
The Painted Desert Inn dates from the 1920s and is now operated by the National Park as a museum and bookstore.
Our next stop was the Puerco Pueblo ruins.
Near the pueblo ruins are many different petroglyphs.
Further along the park road is Newspaper Rock. This site contains a high concentration of petroglyphs.
Our last stop before the park road closure was Blue Mesa. Blue Mesa is a colorful badlands area where large petrified logs are eroding out of the formations.
The petrified wood was often very colorful.
Interesting toadstool shaped rock
