Another place near Titusville that we had heard about for great wildlife viewing was the Viera Wetlands. The official name is the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands at Viera, but most people just call it the Viera Wetlands. The wetlands were actually built as impoundment ponds for the nearby Brevard County wastewater treatment plant to provide for biological purification of the water.

In the right light male Grackles can be very iridescent.
Little Green Heron
Great Blue Heron
Sora
(a poor image, but a fairly elusive bird)

The Great Blue Herons liked to build nests in the crowns of palm trees.
A Great Blue Heron with a chick
Pie-billed Grebe
Wow! Few ever get a glimpse of a rail, much less a photo. The only time I have seen a sora is when the orthinologist leading a tour brought out a recording, and used it to call the bird out of the foliage.
